Reload, then test the site on mobile data. If it only fails on your network, turn off VPN and proxy settings, pause antivirus web filtering, flush DNS and reset Winsock (netsh winsock reset), and restart the router.

ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED, explained

ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED appears when a connection is opened and then closed by the other end before the server sends any response. It differs from a reset only in how the connection ends. For you as a visitor, the troubleshooting is the same.

Typical causes are network filters that silently drop connections to certain sites (VPNs, school or work proxies, parental controls, antivirus), outdated network settings on the PC, or a server that is overloaded or blocking your region.

Signs of the problem

  • “This site can’t be reached. Example.com unexpectedly closed the connection. ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED”.
  • The problem is limited to certain sites or to one Wi-Fi network.
  • Mobile apps on the same network may also fail to load content.

What causes ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED

  • A VPN, proxy or content filter closing the connection.
  • Antivirus or firewall software blocking the site.
  • Stale DNS cache or damaged Winsock settings.
  • A website that is overloaded, misconfigured or geo-blocking visitors.

Fixes to try, in order

  1. Check whether it's just youOpen the site on another device or on mobile data. If it fails everywhere, the site has a problem. Wait and retry later.
  2. Turn off VPN and proxyDisconnect VPN apps and turn off Use a proxy server in Settings → Network & internet → Proxy (Windows) or remove proxies in System Settings → Network → Details → Proxies (Mac).
  3. Pause security softwareTemporarily disable web protection in third-party antivirus and see whether the page loads. Re-enable it and add an exception if that was the cause.
  4. Flush DNS and reset WinsockRun the commands below in an administrator Command Prompt, then restart the PC.
  5. Change DNSSet your DNS to a public resolver such as 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 or 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 in the network adapter settings, then reload the page.
  6. Restart the routerPower-cycle the router and modem for 30 seconds.

Command

ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset

Elevated Command Prompt on Windows. Restart afterwards for the reset to take effect.

How to confirm the fix: The page loads on the same network without the error after a restart.

Prevent it from coming back

Avoid stacking VPN, proxy and antivirus web filters; keep network drivers and router firmware current.
