What's going on
Heat comes from the processor and the battery. Fast charging, wireless charging, 5G in weak signal, GPS navigation and games are all heavy loads. After an iOS update, the phone indexes photos and data for a day or two, which also warms it up.
iOS protects itself: it slows charging, dims the display and may show “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it.”
How it shows up
- iPhone warm or hot to the touch.
- “Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down” warning.
- Charging pauses or screen dims.
Why it happens
- Charging (especially wireless) while in use.
- Games, video recording, navigation, 5G in weak signal.
- Background activity after an update.
- Ageing battery or direct sunlight.
How to fix it, step by step
- Cool it downUnplug, remove the case, close apps, and move it to shade. Avoid fridges and cold packs (condensation risk).
- Check battery usageSettings → Battery → look for apps with high background activity and limit Background App Refresh.
- Give updates timeAfter an iOS update, warmth for 24–48 hours is normal.
- Reduce loadLower brightness, switch 5G to LTE in weak-signal areas (Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data), and avoid gaming while charging.
- Update iOS and appsBug fixes often reduce runaway battery use.
- Check Battery HealthIf Maximum Capacity is low or 'Service' is shown, have Apple replace the battery.
Keeping it from coming back
Avoid using heavy apps while charging and don't leave the phone in sun or cars.
