chkdsk C: /scan and DISM/SFC, turn off Fast Startup, and remove third-party antivirus to test.UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION, explained
The store manager keeps compressed memory pages and moves memory between RAM and the page file on disk. When it can’t read or write that data as expected, Windows stops with UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION.
Because the store depends on the system drive, a drive with bad sectors, outdated firmware or a flaky connection is the most common cause. Antivirus and file-system filter drivers come next.
Signs of the problem
- Blue screen: “Stop code: UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION”.
- Crashes at random times, including idle and after waking.
- Slow file access or disk warnings before the crashes.
What causes UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION
- Failing or degraded SSD/HDD.
- Outdated SSD firmware or storage controller drivers.
- Antivirus or file-system filter drivers.
- Corrupted system files; Fast Startup issues.
Fixes to try, in order
- Back up firstCopy important files to another drive or cloud storage in case the drive is failing.
- Check drive healthUse the SSD maker's utility (Samsung Magician, WD Dashboard, Crucial Storage Executive) or CrystalDiskInfo. “Caution” or “Bad” status means plan a replacement.
- Update firmware and driversInstall SSD firmware updates and the latest chipset/storage drivers.
- Check and repairRun
chkdsk C: /scan, then DISM and SFC (commands below). - Turn off Fast StartupPower Options → Choose what the power buttons do → untick Turn on fast startup.
- Test without third-party antivirusUninstall it and use Microsoft Defender temporarily.
Command
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Run in an elevated Command Prompt (Run as administrator). DISM can take 10–20 minutes; run sfc after it finishes, then restart.
Prevent it from coming back
Keep SSD firmware current, leave free space on the system drive, and replace drives that show health warnings.
