Turn on Memory Saver in chrome://settings/performance, open Chrome's Task Manager (Shift+Esc) to find heavy tabs and extensions, remove extensions you don't use, and close or group tabs you aren't using.

What's going on

High memory use isn’t automatically bad. Unused RAM does nothing, and Chrome releases memory when the system needs it. It becomes a problem when the PC slows down, or tabs crash with out-of-memory errors.

Symptoms

  • Chrome uses several GB in Task Manager.
  • PC slows down with many tabs open.

What causes it

  • Many open tabs.
  • Extensions running on every page.
  • Heavy web apps (video, editors, dashboards).

Try these fixes

  1. Turn on Memory Saverchrome://settings/performance → Memory Saver on.
  2. Find heavy tabsPress Shift+Esc and sort by Memory footprint.
  3. Trim extensionsRemove unused extensions; set others to run only on click (Site access → On click).
  4. Restart Chrome dailyLong sessions can accumulate leaks; restarting restores tabs.
  5. Update ChromeUpdates include memory improvements.
How to tell it worked: Chrome's memory footprint drops and the PC stays responsive.

Avoiding it in future

Keep extension count low and use Memory Saver.
