End all Chrome processes in Windows Task Manager and reopen. Then update Chrome, disable extensions, turn off graphics acceleration, clear cached data, and reset settings if it continues. Check that antivirus isn't scanning Chrome heavily.

What's going on

When the browser’s main process stops responding, every tab freezes. Graphics driver bugs (fixed by turning acceleration off), extensions and a damaged profile are behind most freezes.

How it shows up

  • “Google Chrome (Not Responding)” in the title bar.
  • Chrome freezes for seconds or minutes.
  • Can't close Chrome normally.

Common causes

  • Extensions.
  • GPU acceleration/driver problems.
  • Corrupted profile or cache.
  • Antivirus interference.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Force closeCtrl+Shift+Esc → right-click Google Chrome → End task, then reopen.
  2. Update Chrome and GPU driverInstall updates for both.
  3. Turn off hardware accelerationchrome://settings/system.
  4. Disable extensionsTest with extensions off.
  5. Clear cacheClear cached images and files.
  6. Reset or reinstallchrome://settings/reset; if needed, uninstall and reinstall Chrome.
How to tell it worked: Chrome stays responsive over a normal browsing session.

Keeping it from coming back

Keep Chrome and graphics drivers updated and extensions minimal.
