The short explanation
Chrome keeps copies of page files (images, scripts, styles) to load sites faster. When a site updates and Chrome keeps using an old copy, pages can look broken, show old content or fail to log in.
Clearing only Cached images and files doesn’t sign you out. Clearing Cookies does, so leave that unticked unless a site keeps misbehaving.
Signs of the problem
- A site shows old content or broken layout.
- Pages fail to load after a site update.
- Login or checkout loops.
What causes it
- Outdated cached files.
- Corrupted cache data or cookies for a site.
Fixes to try, in order
- Hard refreshOn the problem page press Ctrl+Shift+R or Shift+F5. With DevTools open (F12), right-click the reload button → Empty cache and hard reload.
- Clear one site's dataClick the icon left of the address → Site settings → Delete data (or Clear data).
- Clear all cache (desktop)Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete (or go to
chrome://settings/clearBrowserData), choose All time, tick Cached images and files, click Delete data. - AndroidChrome → ⋮ → Delete browsing data → tick Cached images and files → Delete data.
- iPhone/iPadChrome → ⋯ → Delete browsing data → tick Cached images and files → Delete data.
Prevent it from coming back
You don't need to clear cache routinely; do it when a site misbehaves.
